EL Proposal

Hello class,

I had an idea for the EL project. I’m not entirely sure of the logistics but I was thinking because we are so spread out geographically that instead of us going out to these non profits that we could bring them to us. George Mason being home to over 20,000 active students, naturally it would be a great place to organize a sort of non profit organization awareness event during our last scheduled class. We could break up into groups with a goal to get 5-10 organizations to come to a designated location on campus and set up a booths with fliers, pictures and representatives to promote their cause. It would be possible for students to represent an organization if a representative wasn’t able to make it. It would give us the opportunity to learn about the organizations through event planning while giving the organizations the opportunity to reach out to George Mason students increasing the influence of the civil sector among students. It would be a lot of work but I think it would be a beneficial learning experience and would be good for the university as well. Just an idea for you guys to think about.

  1. Interesting idea, Brandon. I’ve just got one logistical point to throw out. Along with any project, you’ll probably have a reflection essay about the experience to figure out what you learned, etc. As a result, if we did something like this we’d want to do it earlier than the last class so you had time to do the reflection. I don’t have a problem moving that open class around on the schedule to make it work.

  2. I really like this idea a lot but I am not sure how much we would learn about the nonprofit sector. I feel like we would get way too wrapped up in the logistics of organizing the actual event and overlook anything we would actually learn about civil society or how the nonprofit sector affects our lives.

On the other hand I do think that its a really good idea and maybe we could talk to student affairs to see how logistically difficult organizing something like this would be, and whether there would be any costs associated with it.

Thanks for a really good idea, hopefully if all 30 of us put our minds together we can figure out an awesome project that would be both fun and insightful.

  3. I think that this is a great idea. It will give us an oppurtunity to work with people in the non-profit sector and we will be able to also learn a lot about their organzations. It will also help to get more information out to Mason students about the many non-profits around the area.

  4. I think that this is a great idea, but I am thinking of the organization part of this as well. Organizing an event like this will require alot of attention, which I think would take away from us really understanding the nonprofit sector as a whole. I think it will be great for us to divide into groups of 4 or 5.

I like the idea of doing something on campus, I just thought that I should throw this idea out to see what you all would think. What about researching an organization (ex, hand outs, mission, purpose, etc..) and understand the organization and represent the organization ourselves on campus. This way we could have a chance to self reflect when we are ‘acting’ as part of the organization. Please feel free to comment..:-)
